PT. Eco-nergy Kogyo Indonesia
Eco-nergy Kogyo Group was founded by its principals in Japan. Its primary objective is to mitigate global climate change and initiate sustainable development through the application of the Kyoto Protocol financial mechanisms in particular the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Joint Implementation (JI).
PT. Eco-nergy Kogyo Indonesia (PT. EKI), has been looking at funding primarily power generation plants and GHG emission reduction initiatives, both small-scale (<15MW) and large scale (>15MW), utilizing Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs). These include the use of biomass, bagasse, wind-power, hydro-power, solar power, etc. The purpose of these projects is to supply communities facing power shortages with sustainable renewable energy power.
Example of Mini Hydro Power Project in Aceh
Given the combination of Asia’s un-precedented Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate and soaring costs of fossil fuels, it will be inevitable that the power requirements, and thus power related projects using alternative energy, will also grow in tandem. Methods of funding such projects, by PT. EKI include project financing as well as carbon financing. Under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), developed countries known as Annex 1 countries are able to meet their own GHG reduction targets by purchasing reductions in GHG emissions through the application of RETs in conventional industries in (e.g. cement manufacturing plants, steel mills, pulp and paper mills) as well as in power plant combustion methods and different sources of fuels in these power plants. Strategically partnering with Japanese counterparts, PT. EKI achieves carbon financing by purchasing these reductions according to the volume of GHG that a particular project achieves in reducing. This GHG reduction is known as Certified Emission Reduction (CERs).
Several projects across Asia are being considered for carbon financing by the Eco-nergy Kogyo group. PT. EKI focuses on opportunities in Indonesia, and does this by accommodating necessary processes that need to be taken in order to certify GHG reductions. These include the development of the Project Idea Note (PIN), the Project Design Document (PDD), and proceeding there from through a rigorous validation process by an appointed Designated Operational Entity (DOE), Host Country Approval and Registration of the project with the CDM Executive Board (EB). PT. EKI also conducts capacity building activities crucial for the sustainable development
PT. EKI’s commitment to sustainable development (SD) is further strengthened by its ability in developing new initiatives as principal consultants to SD projects that are designed to help alleviate socio-economic problems to address shortage of food, electricity and water in under developed communities and countries, globally.
